James Bond (a smug and possibly sociopathic but entertaining cad) ceases to be Bond if he’s re-cast as an earnest do-gooder or a right-on woman.
So too does this woke re-writing of Snow White look set to be another preachy balls-up.
In relation to the forthcoming neo-puritanical feminist corrections to Snow White & The 7 Dwarfs, Brittany Eldridge, commentary editor for the International Journal of Disney Studies, asserts, improbably, that “the whole point of fairy tales is to adapt and evolve”.
Bollocks. The whole point of classic fables is to stay substantially the way they were, warts and all. Grimm’s tales, for instance, have some of the darkest content in world literature. Bad stuff happens. Punches are not pulled.
The forthcoming re-make of the old tale has ran into a couple of fundamental problems, notably:
- You can’t say “dwarf” any more
- You can’t show a woman in love with a bloke, or being rescued by a bloke
Which does rather tend to tear the arse out of the entire film lol.
It’s a cynical and dishonest appropriation of a world-famous story by a cabal of right-on bores who detest everything about the original.
They’re only interested in the story because it’s already a de facto world brand.
They will abuse the name to make money for themselves, whilst vandalising everything about the actual story.
And look, I get it, if short-arses and gay women and 4th wave feminists find the old story offensive, fine – but stop being lazy, go off and write your own new story / film, and let’s see how many people bother to see it.
And please, stop fucking up the classic storyline for those of us who prefer the original.
